Filing Extension

A filing extension is an official request that allows taxpayers additional time to file their tax returns beyond the standard due date. While a filing extension provides more time to submit the completed tax return, it does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed.

For example, individuals in the U.S. typically have until April 15 to file their federal income tax return. By filing Form 4868, they can receive an automatic six-month extension to file, moving the deadline to October 15. However, any tax liability must still be paid by the original due date to avoid interest and penalties.
