Form SS-4 is an application form used by businesses to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The EIN is a unique nine-digit number assigned to businesses for tax reporting purposes, similar to a Social Security number for individuals. Completing Form SS-4 provides the IRS with essential information about the entity, such as its legal structure, ownership, and the primary purpose of the business.
This form can be submitted online, by mail, or by fax, and is typically required for partnerships, corporations, and certain sole proprietors. For example, a newly formed LLC would complete Form SS-4 to obtain its EIN before opening a bank account or filing tax returns.
